Preparing Your Home for the Holidays

The holiday season is here with Christmas only a month away! Between shopping for gifts, organizing dinner parties and get togethers, and preparing those delicious holiday meals, you need to find time to prepare your house for the holidays. There’s a lot of work that could be done, likely too much with too little time, so we’ve created a list of four things to focus on in the four weeks leading up to Christmas.

 1.    The Annual Christmas Light Installation

If you haven’t already, you’re probably going to put up your Christmas lights soon. Maybe you’ll opt for the white, dangling icicle lights, or the more traditional multi colored lights.  Either way, someone is going to have to get up on the ladder and hang them on the roof. It’s best to do this before it gets too icy, cold and wet. If you aren’t comfortable installing them yourself, there are many local services that you can hire to install them more you. No hassle, no problem.

If you’re a bit more festive, you may decide to decorate your house with interior lights. This can definitely add a nice touch to brighten up your home for the winter season. Check out some of the photos below for design ideas.

2.    Tidy Up Your Home

If you’re like most people, you’re notorious for procrastinating the frequent tidying of your home. Don’t be ashamed, we all do it. However, with many guests visiting your home in the next month it’s time to buckle down and tidy everything. Hang up all of the laundry that’s lying around.  Throw out or shred all of the loose papers sitting in piles around your home. Put away all of the random items sitting on your dining room table. Whatever your mess may be it’s time to clean it up! If you’re going to be hosting a dinner party or get together, it’s also worth getting your carpets cleaned.

3.    Clear Out the Fridge and Freezers Now!

With the winter holidays come many meals with family and friends.  This means that your fridges, freezers and coolers are going to get much use in the coming weeks. In order to make sure you have adequate room for storing the food, you should start looking through your fridges and freezers soon and clear out anything unnecessary.  Throw out the expired food and leftovers from last week. Reorganize your fridge to make optimal space for the turkey and various side dishes.  You won’t have time to do this while you are cooking on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day! Plan ahead and stay ahead.

4.    Winterize the Yard!

Caring you’re your yard is a year round job, and preparing for the winter is mandatory to have it healthy for the springtime. The best time is now; as most of the grass has stopped growing and freezing temperatures haven’t quite set in. Spend time now, or get the kids involved, to help rake up all of the leaves that may have fallen.  Give your grass that final cut and apply a winterizing fertilizer. If you don’t have time to do this yourself, consider hiring a landscaping company.

Langley realtor Angela Evennett also shares her thoughts on how to prepare for the holiday season:

Whether you’re planning a small family gathering or lots of parties this holiday season, it’s always best to be prepared. Think ahead, and start tidying, cleaning (including carpets!) and getting ready for local or out-of-town guests. Decorate the house with live greenery for a fresh seasonal scent and don’t forget to simmer my all-time favourite Christmas scent on the stove for a constant welcoming aroma:

In a small saucepan add:

  • 1 cut up orange
  • 3 cinnamon sticks (broken in half to release more fragrance)
  • 1 cup fresh cranberries
  • 1-2 teaspoons of whole or ground cloves
  • 1-2 teaspoons of nutmeg
  • Fill water to about 1 inch below rim, or use apple juice or cider for more aroma.
  • Place on stove and simmer on low.

Make sure you bake lots of Christmas goodies ahead of time and freeze them so you always have them on hand for guests and tuck away a few ‘generic’ gifts incase somebody surprises you, so you always have something ready!

How often should you clean your carpets?

How often should you clean your carpets

Keeping your carpet well maintained is a painstaking task. Taking wear and tear all day everyday, it is easy to spot the surface dirt though knowing invisible invaders are making a home in your carpet at all hours of the day is demoralizing. Professional carpet cleaners ensure your home is a healthy home. How often you require their service is a serious question.

Factors that affect carpet cleanliness

  • carpet quality
  • number of people living in your home
  • pets
  • smokers
  • local environment

The combination of these factors influences how often you should have your carpets cleaned by a professional.

Higher quality carpets break down less with each professional clean therefore frequency can increase without needing to worry about long term consequences.

The number of people in the house relates to overall wear and tear in a household. This is exaggerated with kids, who tend to run everywhere – bringing in all sorts of great stuff to nestle its way deep into your carpet. The same goes with pets, not only bringing dirty paws but the malting they do to. The more people and animals that are in you household the more you will need to call in the professionals to clean the carpet thoroughly to provide a healthy home for your household members and guests.

Smokers seemingly impact everyone and everything they touch. Carpets are not immune.

The scent from cigarette smoke becomes entrenched in the carpet with ash also finds its way into the carpet, creating smelly, poisonous carpet that needs to be cleaned thoroughly to remove the remnants.

Households can live in naturally dusty and humid areas. These traits are out of the control in general. If you live near the beach, wind can bring sand through the house. The more prone your home is to dust and high humidity, the more often you will require professionally cleaning to prevent your carpet becoming a health hazard.

Vacuuming should be done regularly, as painful as it is, vacuuming will only get rid of the surface level of dirt that you can see. A professional clean gets to everything that you can and cannot see and returns the carpet back to the fresh original color.

There are various methods that professional carpets cleaners use depending upon the particular carpet. The team at Langley Real Estate company comment “Where possible keep the manufacturers cleaning instructions, the more information you give to the professionals, the better the result for you.”

Based on the factors above, carpets should be professionally cleaned from every three months to once per year minimum. Your carpet is like you, the more stress you are under the more vacation time required. A professional clean is a carpets vacation. If there is a lot of foot traffic, both pets and humans in humid conditions with smokers floating about be sure to give your carpet regular holidays for a longer healthier life.

Carpet Cleaning is Best Left to the Professionals

sears carpet cleaningThe carpet is undoubtedly the unsung warrior of the household. Getting walked on all day every day, filth burying its way deep down where it cannot be reached. Every now and again we will run the vacuum quickly over the surface, or remove a stain but give it no consistent tender loving care. Your carpet deserves a deep thorough clean from time to time by a professional. Would you try to figure out something as important as your mortgage yourself? No. You would hire a mortgage professional. Carpet cleaning is no different. There are plenty of do it yourself options readily available, but leaving the job to a professional will be appreciated by your unsung hero.

The Rental is Not Yours. It Does Not Get the Care it Needs.

Do you know how to maintain a carpet cleaning machine properly? The people you rent them off do not either. This machinery is expensive and when used daily by non-professionals the maintenance received is not optimal, leaving the machines to do the ‘best it can’. The professionals rely on their equipment for their livelihood so you can be sure the expensive equipment is in great working order every time.

One Size Fits All Does Not Work.

Carpets quality differs a lot; the do it yourself option does not cater for this with a one size fits all approach. The professionals really understand the different characteristics of carpet and its needs, leading to a caring clean that is best for each unique carpet.

Your Short Term Fix is Just a Mask.

Let’s be honest, we always happen to spill wine on the carpet – when it’s red. There are lots of spot cleaning methods that will appear to get rid of the stain when we act right away, but the truth is, they are short term fixes that discolour the carpet and merely mask the smell. For the professionals, these are a cakewalk. Their techniques cut to the core issue and remove the stain completely leaving no trace.

Following Instructions is Hard.

When you read the instructions on carpet cleaners, they seem very straight forward; however it is inevitable that things will not go smoothly. A common mistake with rentals is water saturation. Sometimes not visible to the human eye, if not followed up, mould and mildew form leaving the carpet in worse condition. The professionals ensure that the carpet is completely dry and their techniques do this in a time frame shorter than yours.

Carpet Cleanliness Affects Your Health.

With so many foreign materials getting planted within the carpet, the dust builds up fast. This along with the resulting bacteria then affects the air we breathe. You may not notice this day to day, but it truly affects your health when you breathe in polluted air every day. If you are going to do a thorough job, let someone who knows what they are doing complete it, a proper clean will ensure you are breathing the cleanest air possible.
Carpets put up with a lot of use. We all love to get our hands dirty and solve it the DIY way but cleaning carpets is something not to skimp on. It is not a fun job and can easily go wrong with worn down equipment. Spending the extra money on a professional is a great investment, the long term savings from lower health costs and the longer life of your carpet makes a professional hire a snap decision.

Selling Your Home? Clean Carpets Will Surely Impress.

Sears Carpet CleaningMost home sellers tend to not think about cleaning their carpets before they show their home to potential buyers. With a plethora of things to prepare before selling their home, who can blame them? However, real estate agent Angela Evennett, says that today’s home buyers are more concerned than ever about the longevity of the carpets and flooring in the homes they’re considering.  She says, “Doing a few extra small things when preparing your home for sale, such as a professional carpet cleaning or a landscaping touch up, will give you a step up over other home sellers. Today’s home buyers will notice the difference!”
